With ‘The Office’ the artist was interested in the notion of social behaviour, focusing on her colleagues at her workplace.

Kaur was interested in the interaction between the employees and the hierarchy seen within the workplace. However, not within professional roles but within social status.

The work stems from personal experiences in the workplace having gone through forms of discrimination and social neglect. Characteristics in each individual became obvious over the course of the year through familiarity and observations as an outsider.

This in turn has changed Kaur’s positive outlook on the working environment, originally creating senses of paranoia and later developing an understanding of the playground mentality within the office.

The work shows the common links seen with the various people within the office. The frames and string follow the same layout of the office. Employees are free to sit anywhere they choose although they have separated themselves into groups and have arranged between themselves positions in the office. Groups are now isolated into categories i.e. rude – girls/boys, self-obsession.

Each individual’s attributes have been listed and a connection is shown where communication is made between each employee and this can be seen through the key as well. There are various forms of interaction between the colleagues ranging from forced to one way. From a personal perspective, a majority of the employees are involved in the strive for popularity within the group creating a sense of competition.
