The work deals with the theme of relationships, particularly focusing on two differing relationships in Kaur’s life; Gemma being her social relationship, having grown up with her most her life and now living together at university. The second being John, who the artist had known for six months while at university and being her first sexual relationship. Kaur was interested in the way she communicated with these two main relationships in her life and how Gemma and John perceived her.

The work revolves around two set interviews with Gemma and John, questioning the nature of the relationship with Kaur. The interviews try to negotiate ideas of perception and social obligation.

Going through the recordings of the interviews, Kaur found that certain statements held more relevance than others from both interviews and it is this which is apparent in the piece. The way in which the text of both interviews is reproduced onto socially significant articles, cigarettes and condoms.

Cigarettes being associated with the Gemma , as both Kaur and Gemma tend only to communicate with each other seriously when smoking. Condoms with John as he was the first sexual partner in the artist’s life. The copper wiring from which these objects hang symbolises the artists, as she is obviously the common link in each of the relationships.

The colour of the text within the work has an important role. The black text representing the interviewee’s personality and the red representing Kaur.
